What age should you start voice lessons?

Many parents ask for voice lessons for students as young as 3 or 4 years old, but formal vocal training is not usually successful or appropriate for students this young. It is best to begin voice lessons once the student's voice is more grounded and they have begun to go through puberty.

How long do singing lessons take to work?

This depends entirely on the amount of time a person is able to put into learning. In some cases singing can be learned in only a few months, but some people take 3 years or more to learn how to carry a tune. Learning the intricacies of singing like harmonizing with other vocalists or the skill of vibrato, can take longer.

Mary Krason Wiker, Voice

Mary Krason Wiker has been teaching in the greater Cleveland area since 2012 and enjoys sharing the challenges and joys of studying music with her students. Mary has a holistic approach to teaching, helping students discover their unique, natural voice in a healthy and supportive way through the practice of solid vocal technique. She teaches a variety of styles, including classical/operatic, musical theatre (both belter and legit styles), and popular/CCM music. Mary enjoys working with students of all levels and from all walks of life.

Mary’s students have participated in a variety of vocal competitions and evaluations. She has prepared students for the annual Ohio NATS auditions and the OMEA solo evaluations, where her students have received Superior ratings. She has also prepared students for a wide variety of auditions including (but not limited to) the Cleveland Orchestra Children’s Chorus, Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus, Blossom Festival Chorus, school performances, musical theatre shows, choral solos, and college auditions.

Mary is an active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and the Voice Foundation. She participates in continuing education workshops and conferences to strengthen her teaching toolbox and to stay up-to-date on recent voice pedagogy research and methods.

Mary holds a B.A. in Voice from Franciscan University of Steubenville and an M.M. in Vocal Performance from Cleveland State University. She has studied with Alanna Keenan, Elizabeth Unis Chesko, and Helen Todd. Mary has been a member of a variety of choruses, including the Blossom Festival Chorus. She has contributed as a soloist in the Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and the greater Tri-State area. As a church musician, she has sung for services and events in the Steubenville, Pittsburgh, Lexington/Richmond, and Cleveland area.
